The folks who bring you the Merriam-Webster dictionary select their top words of the year not by how trendy or new they are, but by which words are the most looked up in their online dictionary.
This year, nine of the top ten words are easily linked to big news stories.
For example, the word people look up more than any other was "admonish", which had to do with Rep. Joe Wilson's interruption of president Obama's speech to a joint session of Congress in September.

Congressman Joe Wilson's frothing display of impulsive behavior which he unleashed by shouting, "You lie," before an aghast world wide TV audience expecting to hear the president of the United States elaborate on a conflicted national health care policy has become an infamous shout heard around the world.
It gave new and reverberative prominence to one of our most enduring elements of universal communication, The lie.
Much maligned, but ever increasingly perfected, the lie has become a celebrated staple

No matter which side of the political divide you stand on — liberal or conservative, Republican or Democrat — one thing you want to believe about your elected representatives is that they think for themselves.
Which makes it so galling to discover how thoroughly lobbyists are able to guide the debate in Washington.
The New York Times reported this week that during the House health care reform debate, "statements (recorded in the official Congressional Record) by more than a dozen lawmakers were ghostw

Growing concern about incivility is one of America's more appealing trends.
Increasingly, individuals and institutions are seeking ways to burnish the Golden Rule.
The concern isn't new - professor P.M. Forni started the Johns Hopkins Civility Project 12 years ago and published a book in 2002: "Choosing Civility: The Twenty-Five Rules of Considerate Conduct."
Civility even has a Facebook page called "The Civility Initiative," where Forni and visitors exchange thoughts on the subject.

Some of the quotes attributed to Shuler and Wilson are not word for word and arguably could have been coincidence.
But not this:
Rep. Joe Wilson said, "One of the reasons I have long supported the U.S. biotechnology industry is that it is a homegrown success story that has been an engine of job creation in this country."

On Oct. 3, there was a letter from Emmett Salas headlined, "Give troops what they need or get out."
I don't know Salas, but I agree with everything he said.
In the fall of 1965, I was in and around DaNang.

You are in between a rock in a hard place.
You seem to talk one way to Black people and another to your Republican colleagues.
Do you really think white Republicans are scared of you?

eventhough we afford freedom of speech rights by the constitution, is it okay for any of us to
yell Fire! in a crowded theater?
What joe wilson did was wrong and he should apologize to the congress, all US citizens and
his family. If he is not censored for conducted unbecoming of a congressman, i am afraid
this will set the wrong precedent for others to get out of line and say and do as they wish. ie,
military personel etc.

The Hon. Joe Wilson Republican-South Carolina is my Representative. I feel he was speaking out for all of us frustrated by this usurper to the presidency. And sorry, but Jimma Carta is soft in the head.

More important than whether Congressman Wilson was rude or not is the fact that when the president of the United States lies to the entire country -- as Obama did when he made the incorrect claim that his reform legislation would not benefit illegal aliens -- then that's a much more serious thing. And that is why ALIPAC is calling on the president to apologize to the nation.

Check it out:
First, Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) accuses the CIA of lying though an intelligence report indicates that she was briefed on the use of harsh interrogation tactics in 2002; contradicting her previous statements.
Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-NY) is under investigation for misusing rent controlled properties, avoiding taxes, and using U.S. government letterhead to raise money.
Reps. John Murtha (D-PA) and Peter Visclosky (D-IN) have been linked to lobbying firm PMA, which has been raided twice by FBI agents.
Rep. Edolphus Towns (D-NY) has refused to subpoena Countrywide Mortgage documents to investigate possible sweetheart loans; Towns received two loans from Countrywide.
Rep. John Conyers (D-MI) forced aides to perform personal tasks against ethics rules and had them work on "several local and state campaigns including his wife's failed bid for a seat in the state senate."
THESE ARE THE SAME A-HOLES THAT WILL VOTE TO CENSURE JOE WILSON FOR GETTING ALL ANGRY AT O'BAMA FOR HIS BLATANT LYING TO THE NATION!

If Joe Wilson wasn't correct that Obama was lieing, why did the Democrats scramble to put in an amendment that specifically prevents Illegals form being covered?
The facts are that they will still receive health care on our dime no matter what laws are passed. If one of them shows up at an emergency room, the WILL be treated and we WILL pay for it. The problem is that they're here in the first place. Does the word "ILLEGAL" resonate at all with the Democrats? The answer is NO. Tax Cheats, thieves, Acorn and Communist are what infests the Obama Administration. I pray that we make until 2012. I believe the American people will send a clear message in 2010.

The irony is that it was Joe Wilson that was lying when he chose to act like a juvenile. The health plan specifically excludes coverage for illegal immigrants. IN CAPITAL LETTERS, no less. Wilson's outburst and the republican support for his behavior speaks for itself; ignorant, misinforned demogogery with veiled support for the insurance industry. The lemmings following this tripe are motivated by hate, bias and fear.
Wilson also lied to the media about being an immigration attorney. He never was. Looks like the pot calling the kettle black. Pun INTENDED.

I read with interest how so many find fault with the Resolution voted upon by the house. Joe Wilson should be thankful he did not live in a foriegn country, he may be dead by now for the comment disrepecting President Obama. Less you forget the shoe throwing incident of former President Bush landed the galiant reporter in jail for six months. North Korea would have executed anyone insulting their high ranking leader. HOW DARE YOU PRAISE JOE WILSON FOR HIS OUTBURST........PRESIDENT OBAMA IS THE HEAD OF OUR COUNTRY AND SHOULD BE GIVEN THE RESPECT HE HAS EARNED....
at Sep 17th 2009 8:43AM
Obama deserves the same respect that the left wing loons showed Bush. He's a Marxist who wants to be the new DICTATOR of the US. Stop him by speaking the truth about his devious behavior and devious associates now.
